The Mission
The Northern Plains Conservation Network (NPCN) presents a far-sighted, broad-based vision for North America’s grassland region: to restore, in some parts of the Great Plains, the wildlife spectacle that supported our aboriginal peoples, and thrilled Lewis and Clark, John Palliser, and other nineteenth century visitors.
Our vision of large-scale ecological restoration is inextricably linked to the presence of vibrant social conditions and a stable, healthy economy. A major social benefit of this project will be an increase in opportunities for present-day inhabitants to use and enjoy large areas with abundant wildlife.
We encourage and are part of local community conservation efforts. By forming partnerships, we can create a substantial level of support that will attract new resources to the region, thereby stengthening local economies. Local input will ensure that the actions are appropriate for each particular situation.
The Program
To guide this process, NPCN conducted a scientific inventory of this region’s wildlife and habitats. Our analysis identified ten areas with excellent opportunities for large-scale wildllife restoration. While conservation across the entire region is important, these sites offer the greatest promise for the re-creation of a fully functioning ecosystem.
NPCN participants are working toward having one or more of these areas become a showpiece of grassland wildlife. We are employing science, public education, private sector initiatives, and advocacy to promote our vision. By fostering the exchange of ideas and the coordination of action among participants, NPCN hopes to restore North America’s grasslands, and ensure the survival and health of its wildlife and human societies.
